3 Oakland Cops shot (and killed!)....

Doing the rounds tonight, I came across a story of these cops getting shot at. Let me find out the brothers in Oakland are up to big 'tings!

The suspected gunman also was killed, police said. A fourth police officer remained in critical condition, police said.
California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger said flags at the Capitol will fly at half-staff to honor the fallen officers.
"This is a tragic day for law enforcement officers everywhere," he said in a statement. "All four officers dedicated their lives to public safety and selflessly worked to protect the people of Oakland."
Police received a call around 1:15 p.m. reporting two officers down on MacArthur Boulevard, Oakland Police Chief Howard Jordan said.
A manhunt was under way for the shooter when an anonymous caller directed authorities to a building on an adjacent street where the gunman was believed to be barricaded, Jordan said.
The gunman opened fire, wounding two more officers before police returned fire, killing the suspect, Jordan said.
The four officers were taken to Highland Hospital, Officer Jeff Thomason said.
Police said they were investigating whether others were involved in the incident, but don't believe there is another shooter.
Aerial video from the scene off East 27th Street in Oakland showed crime-scene investigators blocking off a a portion of a street, and a sidewalk smeared with pools of blood.

Law enforcement swarmed store fronts and lawns near the shooting scenes.

Three officers died in the attacks, and one was on life support late Saturday.

The suspect, who has not been identified, shot at the SWAT officers, who "returned fire in defense of their lives," said Officer Jeff Thomason, a department spokesman. The suspect, who police believe was acting alone, was killed.

"We've received four officers in the trauma center," said Patricia VanHook, a Highland Hospital spokeswoman, adding that no other information was available.

About 100 officers gathered outside the entrance to the hospital's emergency room, waiting desperately for information about their fallen colleagues. Some of them were wearing SWAT gear, while others were wearing baseball jerseys after having raced to the hospital from a game.

The officers' faces were grim as rumors about the fate of their fellow officers spread through the crowd.

My Thoughts go out to the brave soliers of Oakland. The police are going to want revenge!

Somalians Turn to Piracy to Defend Coasts from European Businesses

Somali pirates have accused European firms of dumping toxic waste off the Somali coast and are demanding an $8m ransom for the return of a Ukranian ship they captured, saying the money will go towards cleaning up the waste.

The ransom demand is a means of "reacting to the toxic waste that has been continually dumped on the shores of our country for nearly 20 years", Januna Ali Jama, a spokesman for the pirates, based in the semi-autonomous region of Puntland, said.

"The Somali coastline has been destroyed, and we believe this money is nothing compared to the devastation that we have seen on the seas."

The pirates are holding the MV Faina, a Ukrainian ship carrying tanks and military hardware, off Somalia's northern coast.

According to the International Maritime Bureau, 61 attacks by pirates have been reported since the start of the year.

While money is the primary objective of the hijackings, claims of the continued environmental destruction off Somalia's coast have been largely ignored by the region's maritime authorities.

Police Brutality in Seattle

I always figured that Seattle was one of the more liberal cities. I guess even liberalism can't contend with Racism though. This morning, doing the rounds of various social news sites, I came across this video.

The King County Sheriff's Office released a video surveillance tape this morning allegedly showing 8-year veteran Deputy Paul Schene, 31, of Auburn, assaulting a 15-year-old girl in custody at a holding facility at SeaTac City Hall in November.

King County prosecutors charged Schene with fourth-degree assault, alleging that he kicked the girl in the abdomen, slammed her against a wall and pulled her hair.

The video was released after Schene pleaded not guilty to the assault charge on Thursday and a King County Superior Court judge denied a motion by his defense lawyers to keep the video from being released.

Schene said in his report on the incident that the girl kicked off one of her shoes, and it struck him in the shin, injuring him.

The judge released Schene on personal recognizance.

According to prosecutors, two deputies had arrested two girls — the girl who was allegedly assaulted and another 15-year-old — on suspicion of auto theft early Nov. 29 after they were stopped driving a stolen car.

The girls were taken to the SeaTac holding facility for fingerprinting.

Prosecutors allege Schene kicked the girl in the abdomen, slammed her against a wall and pulled her hair after she kicked her shoe off at him.

The incident was captured by security cameras.

The girl then complained of breathing difficulties. An aid car was called, but paramedics concluded the girl did not need treatment.

The deputy used "more force than necessary as far as prosecutors are concerned and as far as we're concerned," sheriff's spokesman John Urquhart said earlier this month.

The day after the incident, another detective at another work site was assigned to investigate the alleged assault by the deputy. Schene was placed on paid administrative leave later that day.

He remains on leave.

A sheriff's spokesman said an internal-investigations unit review would determine discipline for the deputy, who could be terminated if it's determined an attack occurred.

In June 2006, deputy Schene shot and killed a mentally ill man who attacked him on Interstate 5.

Pedro Jo, 33, a felon who was described by family members as schizophrenic, was shot several times after Schene pulled him over for driving erratically.

Witnesses said that Jo initially stopped his car in the middle of the freeway, moved toward the shoulder and attacked Schene after walking through traffic when the deputy tried to loosen the handcuffs on a female prisoner who was in the back of his patrol car.

According to a statement from the Sheriff's Office at the time, Jo bit, kicked and ripped the cord of the deputy's portable radio before Schene fatally fired on Jo.

An inquest jury found that the shooting was justified because Schene had reason to believe his life was in danger.

In 2002, Schene was involved in another shooting incident when he wounded a suspect in a car theft after a chase in Burien.
