Queen Nzinga and the Angolan Struggle

I chose to highlight one of the many giants and giant events of our recent History, regarded as the greatest African leader of this millennium by many. A woman, who rose up, and led one of the most successful resistance movements against European settlement and subsequent genocide in Africa. In talking about this great and beloved warrior Queen, her legacy, which has lived on, well after her death must also be touched upon, for because of this extremely charismatic woman the country currently known as Angola, formerly known as Mbundu has been able to hold on to large amounts of cultural sovereignty, as well as being able to keep up, at least nominally with the economies of the richer Arab controlled lands in the north.

Our story begins in around 1492. To understand what goes on presently, one must understand what went on previously. To make a very long and detailed story fit, I'll just give the most needed information.

As every American schoolchild knows, Christopher Columbus sailed for Spain, and indirectly for Portugal in 1492. Because of this early start, the two mentioned countries got a jump start on the destruction of world civilizations, much before the rest of Europe was even ready to man ocean worthy ships. They created new colonies, stole gold and sent it home. After 100 - 150 years, the rest of Europe was ready to take part in the very lucrative business of global genocidal oppression. The second wave of Europeans, the French, Scandinavian, English, and Germans had a century to watch their predecessors and improve upon their mistakes, and indeed they did! In fact, the new entrants in world domination did so well in one upping the originators, that England, in their first naval war defeated the then world super power of Spain, thus cementing their position in world politics. One may wonder what the above has to do with the situation at hand. All events in recent history have impacted greatly the events that followed.

After the losses in wars with the northern Europeans, territories that were originally hijacked by the Spanish and Portuguese were then taken by the winners Mainly the French and British. This caused the losers to scramble for new land, and subsequently new sources of human labor. At this time, the late 1500's the main, and truly only source of human labor rested in Africa. The Portuguese, trying to escape the British and French had to venture deeper into the continent to procure this needed resource. Contrary to popular belief however, the Africans did not just turn lay down and accept this treatment, truly, many fought valiant and often successful campaigns against it. History it seems, has conveniently forgotten these resistance movements, subsequently painting the Africans people in darkness waiting for the Europeans to enslave and subsequently civilize them. In the immortal words of the great historian and Master Teacher Dr. John Henrik Clarke,

".....European historians have inferred, or said outright, that the world
waited in darkness for the Europeans to bring the light. In fact, the Europeans
destroyed more civilization than they ever created. They destroyed civilizations
that were already old before Europe was born."

In other words more lights were put out around the world than were lit.
Nzinga came to power, in the midst of the Portuguese trying to put out the light of her civilization. Her brother, King Mbandi passed away. She took the reins and ruled the kingdom. Implementing many programs directed at keeping her lands out of Portuguese hands. The first thing she did when she came into power was organize a meeting with Portuguese officials, drawing out detailed demands for the invaders to follow, under threat of all out war. She called a conference and it was to be held at the Portuguese stronghold of Luanda. As Chancellor Willams tells it in his historical masterpiece: "The Destruction of Black Civilization: Great Issues of Race from 4500 B.C. To 2000 AD"

".....But even before the peace conference began, and at the risk of wrecking it,
the governor's Caucasian arrogance could not be restrained. He had decided on a
studied insult at the outset by providing chairs in the conference room only for
himself and his councilors, with the idea of forcing the black princess to stand

humbly before his presence. He remained seated of course, staring haughtily as
she entered the room. She took in the situation at a glance with a contemptuous
smile, while her attendants moved with a swiftness that seemed to suggest they
had anticipated this stupid behaviour by the Portuguese. They quickly rolled out

a beautifully designed royal carped they had brought before Nzinga, after which
one of them went on all fours and expertly formed himself into a 'royal throne'
upon which the princess sat easily without being a strain on her devoted
follower."

So from the outset, as expressed by Mr. Williams, the invaders had no intention of coming to an amicable agreement with the beleaguered people. Some like to think of this as some inhuman degradation by the queen, imposed on her slaves, thus equalizing the two sides of the conflict morally. The astute researcher however, would look at the culture of the Mbandi Africans, as well as African people as a whole and see that, as Mr. Williams put it:

"One reason might be that she was so much loved and even blindly followed by her
people that it was believed that all would die, to the last man and woman,
following her leadership. Such were the men, not slaves who gladly formed a
human couch before the astonished Portuguese for their leader."

The astute politician in Queen Nzinga, realizing the position her enemies held at the onset realized immediately that because of the disrespect, they already had their mind set on what was going to happen to her kingdom. As the ruler of her nation she set 3 stipulations before any treaty was signed. They were as follows:

· The Portuguese had to evacuate Kabasa (a
Portuguese fortification) and all nearby areas.
· Declare war on all the Africans who
they had allied with (especially the people known as Jaga whom were their prime
allies)
· All chefs who had capitulated
to Portugal had to be set free.

In return she'd return all the prisoners of war she had taken. The governor signed the treaty and left, to invade almost immediately after voiding the treaty. Next year, her brother, the King died and she became ruler of all of Mbundu. Upon gaining status of Queen she sent an ultimatum to the Portuguese stating that if they didn't go by the terms of the treaty, all out war would be declared.

Before the two armies could meet in battle, a third party showed up, wanting a stake in Mbundu. The Dutch, who were vicious slavers, wanted a part in the action. Quickly the Queen allied with them and a few other African nations and pitted the two against each other. It was her idea, that the Dutch would finish off the Portuguese and then she would turn on the them, expelling all Europeans. Queen Nzinga was a strategist much ahead of her time.

War ensued for a year and the Warrior Queen passed a law that was probably her most notable achievement. She declared that all the territory in Angola, over which she had Authority would forever be free of Slavery. This caused many Africans to rally behind her, and even caused many of the Portuguese army to defect and join her side. She then became a Thorn in the side of the Portuguese that was never relieved. In the book "Black Women in Antiquity", Ivan Van Sertima described her as:

…an astute agitator-propagandist who could easily summon large groups of her fellow countrymen to listen to her. In convincing her people of the pernicious influences of the Portuguese, she would single out slaves and "slave-soldiers" who were under Portuguese control and direct political and patriotic messages their way, appealing to their pride in being Africans.

In essence, she could be seen as one of the forerunners of the pan-Africanist, Black Power movements that exist today. She really appealed to the pride of her people, and her experiment paid off. For the next 30 years, the rest of her life, the Portuguese were unable to subdue the African kingdom.

The Angolan resistance movement of the 1600's was not, at all an easy thing. The Africans felt many setbacks, and the Queen herself suffered greatly. In one event the Portuguese sacked her Island stronghold in the Cuanzaa River, trying to kill her. In doing so they captured one of her sisters. She and some of her soldiers went for the hills. Everyone in Mbundu, down to the youngest conscious child knew she would return. Even though the Portuguese celebrated and told the people their Queen was dead. They'd say things like "She just left, though she will return." As they said she did, and racked up victory after victory under the benefit of surprise.

That wasn't the only time she had to exit her lands. A few years later the Europeans attacked her Island again. Again she left the nation, this time telling her top lieutenants to express to her people that she had died! The cries of sadness and instruments of mourning could be heard from village to village. The military mastermind was just lying in wait though. She went to her former rivals the Jaga peoples and asked for an alliance. She promised to marry their king. She also went to a kingdom in the southern Kongo, and formed an alliance. They both agreed and again she struck at the invaders. This time, with the ferocity of the Jaga and Kongo behind her.

In 1641, the Dutch captured the Portuguese stronghold of Luanda. The Queen then moved her capital out of the Cuanzaa River, and into territory that they had captured from the Portuguese. She couldn't hold on to the land long and was pushed back into Mbundu controlled lands. After capturing her new capital, they took her other sister, got to her files and realized that she was in constant contact with the first sister who was captured so many years back. As punishment, they did awful things to her, decapitated and threw her body in to the Cuanzaa River.

Sadly, the Queen was not immortal. After reaching her late 70's she realized she did not have long left on the Earth, and in a great compromise, she signed a treaty with the Portuguese, allowing them to keep the land they had, and not to encroach anymore upon Mbundu. She died at the old age of 81, and shortly after she died, the Portuguese tried to capture the rest of the country. They failed and were completely unable until, on paper they did at the Berlin conference of 1885. To the Angolans credit, Portugal did not control the whole land until administratively 1951! The people of Southwest Africa were not an easy people for the Portugese to occupy.

In 1956 the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola was created and in 1966 the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola was formed. One a beneficiary of the Soviet Union, and the other, of the United States. Blinded by their need for independence, they allowed the great powers of the world to control them, and cause one of the biggest indirect wars between the USSR and USA.

The Legacy is of Nzinga, and her people's independent nature is very strong. They never gave up the fight. For over 500 years, they went against Europeans, and didn't back down. Because of this spirit, as well as the vast resources in the country, Angola has the fastest growing Economy in Africa, as well as one of the fastest in the world. If present trends continue, there is a wonderful future for the industrious people of Mbundu.

3 Oakland Cops shot (and killed!)....

Doing the rounds tonight, I came across a story of these cops getting shot at. Let me find out the brothers in Oakland are up to big 'tings!

From CNN

The suspected gunman also was killed, police said. A fourth police officer remained in critical condition, police said.
California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger said flags at the Capitol will fly at half-staff to honor the fallen officers.
"This is a tragic day for law enforcement officers everywhere," he said in a statement. "All four officers dedicated their lives to public safety and selflessly worked to protect the people of Oakland."
Police received a call around 1:15 p.m. reporting two officers down on MacArthur Boulevard, Oakland Police Chief Howard Jordan said.
A manhunt was under way for the shooter when an anonymous caller directed authorities to a building on an adjacent street where the gunman was believed to be barricaded, Jordan said.
The gunman opened fire, wounding two more officers before police returned fire, killing the suspect, Jordan said.
The four officers were taken to Highland Hospital, Officer Jeff Thomason said.
Police
said they were investigating whether others were involved in the incident, but don't believe there is another shooter.
Aerial video from the scene off East 27th Street in Oakland showed crime-scene investigators blocking off a a portion of a street, and a sidewalk smeared with pools of blood.

Law enforcement swarmed store fronts and lawns near the shooting scenes.

MORE FYAH!!!!! Show them some real POLICE BRUTALITY!

Update 1
From SF Gate

Three officers died in the attacks, and one was on life support late Saturday.

The suspect, who has not been identified, shot at the SWAT officers, who "returned fire in defense of their lives," said Officer Jeff Thomason, a department spokesman. The suspect, who police believe was acting alone, was killed.

"We've received four officers in the trauma center," said Patricia VanHook, a Highland Hospital spokeswoman, adding that no other information was available.

About 100 officers gathered outside the entrance to the hospital's emergency room, waiting desperately for information about their fallen colleagues. Some of them were wearing SWAT gear, while others were wearing baseball jerseys after having raced to the hospital from a game.

The officers' faces were grim as rumors about the fate of their fellow officers spread through the crowd.

My Thoughts go out to the brave soliers of Oakland. The police are going to want revenge!

Japan's Defence Force in their first act of Policing

Between the end of WW2 and now, the nation of Japan has not entered into any acts of aggression against anyone. Today however, for the first time they are dispatching their ships to the Somali coast to combat piracy.

From CNN

(CNN) — Japan’s defense minister has ordered two destroyers to help fight piracy in the waters off Somalia, the Kyodo news agency reported Friday.

The Maritime Self-Defense Force destroyers will be dispatched Saturday, Kyodo said.

The order, which the Cabinet approved earlier Friday, marks the first policing action for the MSDF, whose major missions overseas have focused on background support such as transport and refueling, the news agency said. A bill approved on the same day allows the MSDF to be deployed in piracy-infested waters as needed

Not cool Japan...

Update from Yahoo News

"Piracy is a threat to the international community, including Japan, and it is an issue that should be dealt with immediately," Defense Minister Yasukazu Hamada told reporters on Friday after issuing the order.

"It is the government's important responsibility to protect the lives and property of the Japanese in these waters, which are an essential marine traffic area for our country."

Resource-poor Japan imports more than 80 percent of its crude oil from the Middle East, much of which is shipped through the waters now at risk from piracy.

The Afrikan Intellectual Revolution

In the main, theoretical racism is of the nineteenth century origin in America and in Europe, and yet the nineteenth century was a century of the greatest resistance against racism. It was during that century when Africans the world over began to search for a definition of themselves. The high-water mark of the Africans reactions to European racism came in the middle of the nineteenth century in the presence of great Black intellectuals such as Martin R. Delany and Edward Wilmot Blyden. Toward the end of the nineteenth century, the great intellectual giant, W.E.B. Duboise took up the fight and ably carried it into the middle of the twentieth century. There is now and international struggle against racism on the part of people of African decent. The struggle has been taken to the world's campuses, where the theoretical basis of racism started. This has helped to create new battlefields and a lot of fear and frustration on the part of white scholarship. Their fear prevents them from recognizing that the removal of the racism that they created is the healthiest thing present-day Black scholarship can contribute to the world.

The Egyptian Origin of Western Religions

This is an assignment I had for my "Western Civilization" class last semester.

  1. What were the accomplishments of the civilizations in the Near East (Mesopotamia and Egypt)? What elements of Near Eastern civilizations were passed on to modern Western civilization?

Just reading this question made me shake my head. Check the essay I wrote for that class.

The idiom “near east” is a relatively new term that has absolutely no scholarly significance and thus no place in any history class. Contemporary historians however have coined the term to mean a small area north of the Arabian Peninsula and north east of the present day, continental boundaries of Africa. The countries that presently occupy this artificial boundary are Turkey, Iraq, Palestine, Israel, Jordan, and some of the Caucasus states. Egypt is separated from the “near east” by the Suez Canal, and on an entire separate continent. Several geographers group Egypt with the “Middle East” which is an equally doltish title, also with very little scholarly utility.

Egypt, is thought by some to have risen somewhere around the third millennium BCE. Many of the ideals, and schools of thought that the world runs on today are heavily borrowed from the ancient people of Kemet(Egypt). According to BBC Science, the Greek alpha numeric system that we in the west treasure so much was copied from the written language used by the Egyptians. Libraries of books can (and have) be written on what else the world has “borrowed” from Egypt, but the focus today is on her influence, through the religions centered around the high Goddess Isis.

Many of the religions that find their origins around the Mediterranean, Tigress and Euphrates have been found to have many links to the spiritual customs of Egypt. Specifically, the Kemetic deities have been known to show up in other societies. A Roman philosopher, Lucius Apuleius wrote of Isis in his classic work,
The Golden Ass: "Phrygians(Turks) call me the mother of the Gods: the Athenians call me Minerva: the Cyprians call me Venus, the Candians call me Diana, the Sicilians call me Proserpina, the Eleusians call me Ceres: some Juno, other Bellona, other Hecate: and principally the Aethiopians which dwell in the Orient, and the Aegyptians which are excellent in all kind of ancient doctrine, and by their proper ceremonies accustome to worship mee, doe call me Queene Isis.”2 She was so loved by her adherents, that over the many millenia that she was worshiped, her religion spread far and wide. According to British historian, William MacQuitty, the cult of Isis continued well into the Common Era(A.D.) when most other gods and goddesses had long been forgotten. There were temples to her all the way from ancient Abyssinia, and Babylon, to “classic” Greece, Germany and Italy.34 Its been discovered that even in the British Isles, she had devotees and great temples.

The Christian church, even today, has many rituals, prayers, idols, customs and beliefs that seem to be almost identical to those of pre-Islamic Egypt6. An example is the belief in resurrection of Christ. The pre-dynastic Kemetic people believed the Nile was created with the tears that flowed from Isis as she mourned her slain husband Osiris. They also believed that with great hard work she resurrected him, and thus, according to Eloise McKinney-Johnson7 “Initiated the whole concept of resurrection.” While on the subject of Christianity, many historians have found that early Christians truly equated of Isis with the virgin Mary. E. A. Wallis Budge, an Egyptologist who worked for the British Museum published many works dealing with the correlation of Isis and Mary. He said of them in the book,
The Gods of the Egyptians “…and the pictures and sculptures wherein she is represented in the act of suckling Horus formed the foundation of the Christian paintings of the Madonna and Child” he also says “…many of the attributes of Isis, the God-mother, the mother of Horus(Isis’ son)...are identical with those of Mary the mother of Christ.” On the final page, I placed a picture of an old Polish Madonna and Child next to the original Madonna (Isis) suckling Horus. I also placed a 17th century Greek Madonna. Notice the location of Isis’ hand, similar to Mary’s, the location of the baby, and finally the similar halo above each Madonna.

With this paper I attempted to give a brief correlation between some of the diets of the ancient world with those of the modern world, and subsequently, show a few of the elements that survived the sands of time to affect the world in which we live. I could go on for many pages about the relationship between the Christian, the old pagan religions of Rome and Greece (Heru-Hercules, Appolo-Horus, etc) and how they are just reflections of what those Europeans picked up in Egypt. That however, would take much more than a small essay to explain. So for now, we’ll leave it at the “Mother of the Nile”, and the Mother of the new god, Christ.

Somalians Turn to Piracy to Defend Coasts from European Businesses

From Al-Jazeera English

Somali pirates have accused European firms of dumping toxic waste off the Somali coast and are demanding an $8m ransom for the return of a Ukranian ship they captured, saying the money will go towards cleaning up the waste.

The ransom demand is a means of "reacting to the toxic waste that has been continually dumped on the shores of our country for nearly 20 years", Januna Ali Jama, a spokesman for the pirates, based in the semi-autonomous region of Puntland, said.

"The Somali coastline has been destroyed, and we believe this money is nothing compared to the devastation that we have seen on the seas."

The pirates are holding the MV Faina, a Ukrainian ship carrying tanks and military hardware, off Somalia's northern coast.

According to the International Maritime Bureau, 61 attacks by pirates have been reported since the start of the year.

While money is the primary objective of the hijackings, claims of the continued environmental destruction off Somalia's coast have been largely ignored by the region's maritime authorities.

From Huffington Post:

Did we expect starving Somalians to stand passively on their beaches, paddling in our nuclear waste, and watch us snatch their fish to eat in restaurants in London and Paris and Rome? We didn't act on those crimes - but when some of the fishermen responded by disrupting the transit-corridor for 20 percent of the world's oil supply, we begin to shriek about "evil." If we really want to deal with piracy, we need to stop its root cause - our crimes - before we send in the gun-boats to root out Somalia's criminals.
The story of the 2009 war on piracy was best summarised by another pirate, who lived and died in the fourth century BC. He was captured and brought to Alexander the Great, who demanded to know "what he meant by keeping possession of the sea." The pirate smiled, and responded: "What you mean by seizing the whole earth; but because I do it with a petty ship, I am called a robber, while you, who do it with a great fleet, are called emperor." Once again, our great imperial fleets sail in today - but who is the robber?

Auntie Assata's Letter to the Pope

In opening, I'd like to give props to the Assata Shakur forums. That's where I found this gem. Also I want to say whatup to youtube user "uthful4ever", theres an amazing song tributed to our beloved sister.

I'm not going to type much, just check the video.

Nas - Fear of Mandingo (Lyrics, Video)

I'm going to give an early warning- this song is crazy vulgar. I'm listing it because Nas says a couple of hot things, I'd like to hear what European people think of his words.

Nas "Fear of Mandingo"

Lyrics:

Do-wap, street hop, that's all we do
Guess what America, we love you
Step up, West Africa, we love you
Guess what, UK, we love you and need ya.
We sing it like Mrs. Makeeba
Not imperious lyricist but at the same time, Nas is impenetrable.
A menacing fool's a description of who?
I resent that, a prince's hats my crown.
My throne used to belong to where the North Korean Kim used to sit at.
They think a chimps a Black man's ancestor.
I think a pimp's a Black man's ancestor.
Just around the paragraph in the corner of my next word,
right here the world's greatest fear.
The fear of the African Black man's penises fetus(?)
Sara Beth married Jessie Lee
Proud man he was. Mother like aunt Jeremiah.
Black blue coloured skin
A softness unmatched by anyone.
Stern with her words. That's mother.
Black mother lover son Jessie.
That ol' Jesse's a trip
At the factory, told the boss man that he quit.
He love his cigarettes, his beer and Sarah Beth
Married less than a month after they met
Sarah Beth was after the sex.
Cute white darlin, pretty angel, from the heavens she's fallen
Such a perfect match. They both human, they both knew when
They got together it'd be a whole bunch of eyes screwing
Whole bunch of how dare you looks,
From the whites at the Negro
Black chicks have fits at her and Mandingo
She's so liberal, screams out in exactly,
Cuz sexually she's got to have the staff of Jessie lee
The fear of the black man's penis
they tried to give it aids,
they tried to give it aids,
the fear of the black man's dick
they lie and scream rape
they lie and scream rape
the fear of the black man's penis
can hide it's in your face
america it's in your face
the fear of the black man's dick.
father of the place, all ladies love the taste
of the nigga.
They used to barbecue blacks, cut off their genitalia
killing off the Aborigines in Australia
The coldest shit I'm trying to tell ya
daddy's telling daughter,
stay away from them bucks they just wanna impale ya
cuz she heard what the myth is
about our heavy equipment
but some sistas might dismiss it
haha yea right,
your right she probably aint get a call back the other night
so fathers you should be scared
cuz your little girl is banging down the door of my bedroom
she trying to get inside my fruit of the looms
she hopes to have my heirlooms
passing down my grandfather's crown jewels
cuz if we get around, the whole world turns brown
it's a fact they want a thug in 'em
guess how many presidents had black blood in em
and this nation's a vast nation
so what was your fixation with castration
color shouldnt matter with relations
color should mater, with life and love
cuz color never matters under the covers when the lights are off
The fear of the black man's penis
they tried to give it aids,
they tried to give it aids,
the fear of the black man's dick
they lie and scream rape
they lie and scream rape
the fear of the black man's penis
can hide it's in your face
america it's in your face
the fear of the black man's dick.
father of the place, all ladies love the taste
of the nigga.

I wanted to bring this joint to the light because it reminds me of Sister Frances Cress Welsing's work of literature called "The Isis Papers". The premise of the whole book is that white supremacy exists to stop us (the melanin wealthy) from "turning the whole world brown"

From the book:
"Racism (white supremacy) is the local and global power system and dynamic, structured and maintained by persons who classify themselves as white, whether consciously or subconsciously determined; which consists of patterns of perception, logic, symbol formation, thought, speech, action and emotional response, as conducted simultaneously in all areas of people activity ( economics, education, entertainment, labor, law , politics, religion, sex and war); for the ultimate purpose of white genetic survival and to prevent white genetic annihilation on planet Earth - a planet upon which the vast and overwhelming majority of people are classified as non-white (black, brown, red and yellow) by white skinned people, and all of the non-white people are genetically dominate ( in terms of skin colouration) compared to the genetic recessive white skin people"
The fear of the Black man's dick.
